On the swim team in high school, we used to have massage trains.
I was always involved, I think I was probably the one who started them usually when someone asked me to rub their shoulders. I never really thought of massage therapy or any kind of physical manual therapy as a career choice, I just wanted to be an artist.
In 2014, I had been running my photography portrait business for 5 years and I was burning out. I loved what I did but it was breaking my body and my spirit. I remember the moment I was ready to make a change-- I was getting my haircut on a really horrible Monday and my stylist was talking about facials. I had never had one, so I just decided on the spot to get one after my cut. It changed my life to be touched in such a gentle and loving way. I had gotten massages before, but they kind of felt like I was getting beat up because my muscles were so tense!
I went home and started looking up esthetician and massage schools and found the perfect fit in Northern San Diego at the Natural Healing Institute of Naturotherapy. I dove into their program and finished within a 15 months as a certified massage therapist in the state of California. I tried every modality I could-- hot stone massage, craniosacral therapy, Reiki, energy + polarity work, reflexology, lymphatic drainage massage, deep tissue, myofascial release, and more. I really aligned with deep tissue and craniosacral therapy and began taking clients.
When we graduated, I told my best friend from massage school that we were starting a practice together and she was going to be my partner. My entrepreneur mindset just could NOT fathom working for a company that would pay me $16 an hour to do massage when I could make $60-120 an hour on my own. So, that began Être... my luxurious relaxation focused massage company with Darby Hanson.
Shortly after we started to build our clientele, I was called back to the east coast. I set Darby up as a solo practitioner because I was the crazy friend who made her start a business and a practice when she had no business experience but she's a kick ass therapist now and I am SO proud of her!!!
In Virginia, I worked at a chiropractor's office learning the ins and outs of office culture, scheduling a large volume of clients and waiting and waiting for my massage license to come in. Sure enough, just about a month or two after I was able to start massaging I got my first Thai massage as a birthday gift from another AMAZING therapist/soulfriend who changed my life (love you Tangee!!) and it changed my life so significantly that I quit my job to go back to school at Woven Body Healing Arts.
Since then, life has been a WHIRLWIND. I began my gypsy adventure just a month after starting Thai school, traveling up and down the east coast, and to bits of the west coast, learning, doing bodywork and finding where I wanted to truly land and build my practice for the next year. I studied over 400 hours of Thai Massage, and I traveled to Thailand in January 2017 to deepen my personal practices that are an important part of Thai practitioner life.
I am now FINALLY settled in Brooklyn, NYC to build my practice and the business that has been bursting out of my heart the last few years. My skills and experience in women's health have helped me find a wonderful clientele that continues to grow in this city and across the US. I can't wait to see where this wild life takes me next!
